I walked into a store and on the wall behind the cashier was a sign which read,
NOTICE: “Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an urgency on my part”.
Yes, I remember those words till this date because for first, I was under the impression that if the customer wants it now then now it is; and second, that notice made me think of how I was so use to running myself thin to make things happen in 24 hours or less and this owner didn’t hold customer service at such a high priority as I did.
What I’ve learned since is that it’s not about “time-management” it’s about using your moments wisely. Question, what happens when self is not in charge of what self does? We tend to waste more time. Yes.
Time is defined as an occurrence of an event. Management is defined as the process of controlling people or things. So then, if I were to use those two definitions, TIME MANAGEMENT is the process of controlling the occurrence of events.
Now, let’s think this through. It would only make sense that the person who is in charge of those occurrences of an event when it comes to your personal life or professional/business life should be you. Would you agree? Of course!
Next, the word “urgency” means there is a decision to be made. The person who is in charge must make a decision on what to work on first. Below is a list to help YOU stay in charge:
Delegate what you can
Say NO more than you say YES
Block off Activities
Set an appointment or Schedule your daily activities
Block and stick to your calendar
Take regular breaks or time outs
Set voicemail with an expectation of a return call
One of my mentors is known for saying, “repetition is the mother of all mastery” (~JennKem). What this means is to practice what you preach or tell others. If you say let’s get you on my calendar then use your calendar. Lol
